Municipal Information

Town Description

As the top-grossing lobster port in the state, Stonington is a hub of commercial fishing activity. IIn 2022, the port earned nearly $45 million in product value from its lobster fishery. Granite, once the boom industry in Stonington, is still quarried in several locations. The town has the only airport (single-engine propeller) in the area.

Stonington is a vibrant year-round community with opportunities for activities, classes and workshops. The Island Community Center is open year-round with something for everyone and is the site of a summer farmers market, the largest in the state. Seasonal events draw many to the Island; these include the lobster boat races, Fishermen’s Family Fun Day, and Winterfest.

The renowned Stonington Opera House is a year-round performing arts center that has a jam-packed schedule of events. The harbor area comes alive in the summer months as tourists flock to Main Street to visit shops and the many art galleries.
